In this paper we show that a single aspect ratio applied to the total porosity of a sand-clay mixture can accurately model both P- and S-sonic data. We also show that the variation of this optimal aspect ratio can be predicted from the petrophysical properties of the rocks, whilst keeping the effective elastic properties of the minerals constant of large geological intervals.

This paper demonstrates the use of deterministic vs. geostatistical inversion, and illustrates the benefits of using geostatistical seismic inversion for reservoir characterization of two oil reservoirs in Kuwait: 1) the Ratawi Limestone carbonate reservoir and 2) the Wara sandstone clastic reservoir. Geostatistical inversion methods integrate the well log data, geological constraints, geostatistical parameters and seismic data to produce a highly detailed reservoir description. The examples in this paper are from the Umm Gudair and Burgan fields in southern Kuwait.

This case study from a field offshore Vietnam shows that the seismic data are only able to constrain the vertical distribution of facies when the beds are close to or above seismic resolution.Prior facies probability trends are required to ensure that the detailed vertical distributions of facies are consistent with geological and reservoir engineering expectations. However, even when below seismic resolution and when the probability trens are laterally invariant, the lateral variations of facies are driven by the seismic data.

Acoustic and shear impedance images, obtained from deterministic simultaneous inversion of a high-resolution crosswell seismic survey, were used to obtain the internal structure of Niagaran reef in Michigan. The crosswell seismic survey was conducted using two monitor wells external to the reef. These wells had depths that extended beyond the depth of the reef, and imaging used reflections from above and beneath the reef, resulting in the best seismic images of any Niagaran pinnacle reef obtained to date.

3D seismic data, acquired to image the Ardley Coals, were deterministically inverted to estimate acoustic impedance. However, the band-limited results overestimate both the acoustic impedance of the coals and the thickness of the coal zones. Additionally, the thin sub-zones of the Ardley Coals are not differentiated in the inversion. A geostatistical inversion was conducted in an attempt to improve the inversion resolution and assess model uncertainty.

Then a comparison and analysis of discrepancies were performed. In a first qualitative step, these observations have been used to modify the reservoir model via manual adjiustments to the rock properties and reservoir boundaries.
